Digital Pheromones - Following digital pheromones left by advanced technological societies

Digital Pheromones is a kinetic and sound performance that evokes a sonic-geographic path based on data collected between Chamonix and La Mer de Glace. The installation aims to sensorially immerse the audience in a surrounding that is influenced by the traces left by wireless networks as well as by the pheromone trails left by the Formica Rufa ant species, which is prevailing in the area. Ultimately, pheromone trails are to ant species what networks are for human species: invisible DNA that outlines the boundaries of advanced information exchange.

The collected data of Digital Pheromones consists of both Bluetooth and Wifi information found in touristic influx near the Glaciers of Chamonix. This resulted in a network-like map of advanced communication. The sound emitted by the kinetic arm was developed based on the magnetic waves recorded in the Chamonix area and its audio output transforms itself based on the recorded data and its geographical location.

This project was developed with Jonas Wolter, Ares Pedroli and supported by anthropologist and Prof. Nicolas Nova, Félicien Goguey, Damien Baïs and Nicolas Baldran.

Digital Pheromones was exhibited in the framework of the Open Days of the Geneva School of Art and Design. Technical and Scenography advisory was provided by Pablo Bellon.
